Flourish
Neon, audio and drawing installation
2016

Flourish was made with school groups in Portsmouth with the Percussionist Sarah Hatch. We made a graphic score listening to sounds of the harbour and drew upon the Vulcan Building's previous life as an artillery store. This work was the culmination of a six month residency at Aspex, Portsmouth as part of The Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award 2016.

Vernon Semper Viret is Latin for 'Vernon always flourishing' and was the motto for H.M.S Vernon who used The Vulcan Building as a land service store.
The neon references some of the designer retail outlets of the neighbouring Gunwharf Quays. The installation also includes a hand drawn scroll sourced from a print of the original motto, printed onto vinyl and mounted onto glass, and a percussive work made during one of the workshops simulating sounds of Portsmouth Harbour.
